The University of Birmingham is continuing to make strategic investments across its research base in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. As part of a significant investment in Environmental Sciences / Geography staffing, we are now seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Atmospheric Science to expand our extensive and internationally excellent research and teaching in this field.
Current research strengths in Birmingham include urban air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, applied meteorology and climatology. The group is heavily involved in international field projects supported by RCUK, EU, DfID and industrial sponsor, development of new observational tools including sensor networks, evaluation of vehicle and other emissions through on-road and dynamometer experiments, laboratory and chamber studies of atmospheric chemical processes, modeling of atmospheric processing on a range of spatial scales (street canyon to global), prediction of meteorological extremes and climate impacts upon infrastructure, and biosphere-atmosphere interactions. Our facilities include several new on-line field instruments, a substantial NERC investment in a detailed atmospheric monitoring on campus, and the BIFoR-FACE facility. Research in this area will further benefit from a major University capital investment in a new Molecular Sciences research laboratory building under development. Applications are invited from candidates in all areas of atmospheric science; however we particularly encourage applications which will complement our research strengths in Applied Meteorology or in Air Pollution, and related topics. Candidates able to strengthen our engagement with industry / business and wider outreach would be especially welcome. Preference will be given to candidates whose work is based primarily upon experimental measurements (field or laboratory) and data analyses rather than solely numerical modelling.
Applicants for this post must demonstrate (or show potential for) international excellence in their research area. Evidence of a track record in publishing work of the highest academic quality and impact is essential, alongside track record of / potential for obtaining external research funding. Willingness to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries within the School and College is strongly encouraged, and applicants must have a commitment to delivering excellent research-informed teaching and learning, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and communicating the relevance and impact of their research to stakeholders.
