Registration open for Bochum Urban Climate Summer School – BUCSS20

2020-02-20 in Meetings, Members, Student_Positions

The Bochum Urban Climate Summer School 2020 (#BUCSS20) aims to provide a general introduction to the many facets of urban climatology, biometeorology and urban climate informatics, a newly evolving research field that uses artificial intelligence, e.g., machine learning or deep learning, to process non-traditional big data sources for urban climate applications. BUCSS20’s goal is to provide structured information and skill-building capabilities related to urban climate monitoring, remote sensing and modelling, thereby strengthening an active pool of young scientists that tackle the major urban sustainability challenges facing future generations. Those attending can expect to gain an understanding of the state-of-the-art via lectures and hands-on tutorials, on the following topics:

  •  A general introduction to urban climate (informatics)
  •  (Thermal) remote sensing in urban areas
  •  Crowd-sourcing for monitoring urban systems
  •  Urban climate modelling at various spatial scales

The summer school, taking place between 17-21 August 2020is primarily intended for master (ECTS available) and doctoral students, but also adresses PostDocs who already have basic knowledge and interest for urban climate issues. Basic background and skills in urban climate modelling, remote sensing and programming are an advantage yet not required.

Registration is open until March 31, 2020 through the BUCSS20 website.

Call: Scholarships to young researchers from developing countries (except Brazil) to take part of their training in Brazil

2018-08-22 in Awards, Student_Positions

A call from CNPq/TWAS http://resultado.cnpq.br/2040398098522170 is now available. It aims to grant scholarships to young researchers from developing countries (except Brazil) to make part of their training in Brazil, at the level of Doctorate-sandwich, Doctorate Full or Post-Doctorate.

The Environmental Fluid Mechanics group (http://sites.bu.edu/efm/) in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University is seeking a postdoctoral candidate interested in urban climate modeling. Specifically, the successful candidate will lead research on improving the urban canopy models in the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Earth System Model and using these urbanized global earth system models to explore a range of urban sustainability and environmental issues including heat stress, water scarcity, urban-related land-use transitions, and urban-atmosphere interactions.

Candidates with previous experience with urban climate modeling using large-scale weather (e.g., WRF) and climate models (e.g., CESM) and experience with high-performance computing in Unix based operating systems and scientific computing languages (e.g., Matlab, Python) are preferred, but highly motivated graduates with background in meteorology and climatology, hydrology, geography, and earth sciences are encouraged to apply. A Ph.D. degree is required by the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will benefit from close collaborations with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and GFDL. The successful candidate will also benefit from an outstanding research environment at Boston University. In particular, the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University has strong strengths in areas of land-use/land-cover change and coupled natural and human dimensions of climate change. The department is also home to the Center for Remote Sensing, an active cluster of faculty who are world leaders in this field.

Interested applicants should contact Dr. Dan Li (lidan@bu.edu). Please include a cover letter, your latest CV, and names of up to three references. PhD opportunity: “Latent heat balance dynamics and heatwaves in cities” UNSW

2018-06-06 in Student_Positions

Climate change strongly impacts the climate of cities, especially during heatwaves where there are synergies between synoptic conditions and local climate. Lack of understanding of the dynamics of evapotranspiration by vegetation and turbulent latent heat balance before heatwaves often leads to under-prediction of such events. This project will connect plant water use and stomatal conductance models differentiated by vegetation-soil systems with land surface models to provide new insight into the impacts of the built environment on moisture fluxes that influence heatwave intensity. Then it will investigate the climate impacts of the dynamic response of greenery in extreme heat conditions.

The ideal candidate has a strong cross-disciplinary scientific background, with solid bases in physics, maths, and especially in heat transfer and climate science. She/he has confidence in numerical simulation and data analysis. Programming skills and knowledge of fundamentals of statistics and probabilistic and possibilistic methods are an asset.

The successful candidate will work with both the Faculty of Built Environment and the Climate Change Research Centre in the Faculty of Science. The student will be supervised by Dr Riccardo Paolini (Built Environment), Dr Melissa Hart (Climate Change Research Centre) and Professor Mattheos Santamouris (Built Environment).

UNSW Scientia PhD scholars are awarded a prestigious scholarship package of $50,000 per annum, comprising a tax-free living allowance of $40,000 per annum for 4 years, and a support package of up to $10,000 per annum to provide financial support for career development activities.

The candidate will also become part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, an international research consortium of five Australian universities (The University of New South Wales, Monash University, The University of Melbourne, The University of Tasmania and The Australian National University) and a suite of outstanding national and international Partner Organizations. The Centre provides excellent opportunities for travel and graduate student development.

Further details about the Scientia PhD scholarships can be found at https://www.2025.unsw.edu.au/apply and summarised in the FAQ (https://www.2025.unsw.edu.au/apply/unsw-scientia-phd-scholarships-faqs).

Interested students should in the first instance send a CV, statement of research interests, and copies of academic transcripts to r.paolini@unsw.edu.au and melissa.hart@unsw.edu.au
